Our school sends out a letter requesting that parents/carers instead spend the money on an activity for the children.

Last year I got a couple of £10 online gift cards through giftcardmall/mygift and printed them out on little thank-you cards—it worked really well. It let the teachers pick what they actually wanted instead of guessing. Someone in our class group suggested pooling money, but I preferred doing something small but personal from my child.
